XFCE

AMD Freesync Drivers

https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1fo8lrr/why_mint/loqxn8e/

Mutter Compositor

On XFCE, I could disable it with xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false, which would give me about 8% higher framerate in glxgears and fewer stutters. I don't remember what, if any, auto-disable rules there are.

Copilot XFCE Fedora AMD System

For your hardware (5700X3D + RX 7800 XT + 16 GB RAM), Fedora XFCE is actually a very good gaming choice. XFCE is lighter than KDE and GNOME, leaving a bit more RAM and CPU overhead available for games.

The good news is that AMD GPUs are basically plug-and-play on Fedora because the AMDGPU driver and Mesa are built into the kernel. The most important gaming improvements are not XFCE-specific.

What I'd do after installing Fedora XFCE
1. Enable RPM Fusion

This is the single biggest thing most Fedora gamers need.

Shell
sudo dnf install \

https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm \

https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

Then update:

Shell
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

RPM Fusion provides Steam, codecs and other gaming packages.

2. Install Steam from RPM Fusion
Shell
sudo dnf install steam

Many Fedora users recommend sticking close to stock Fedora plus RPM Fusion rather than chasing custom kernels and Mesa builds.

3. Enable Resizable BAR (SAM)

On your motherboard BIOS:

Above 4G Decoding → Enabled
Re-Size BAR Support → Enabled

Your 7800 XT gains free performance from SAM/Resizable BAR.

4. Install Gamemode
Shell
sudo dnf install gamemode

Steam launch option:

Plain Text
gamemoderun %command%

This temporarily switches the system to higher performance while gaming.

5. Install MangoHud
Shell
sudo dnf install mangohud

Steam launch option:

Plain Text
mangohud %command%

Gives FPS, frame times, CPU and GPU utilisation overlay.

6. Use Wayland if Available

For your AMD GPU:

Wayland generally works very well
Lower tearing
Better VRR/FreeSync support

If the XFCE spin gives you an X11 session by default, that's fine too. Performance differences are tiny.

7. Enable FreeSync

For your Dell S2721DGF:

Check:

Shell
xrandr --props

Adaptive Sync should be available.

Also enable:

FreeSync in monitor OSD
Adaptive Sync in Fedora display settings
8. Install Multimedia Codecs
Shell
sudo dnf groupupdate multimedia

(or the Fedora equivalent for your version)

Helps with video playback and Proton compatibility.
